"Electro-diesel" locomotives are primarily powered by electric traction motors picking up the electrical current from the electrified "third rail", but also have a small (600hp) diesel engine to power the loco away from the electrified power rail, principally in goods yards. Primarily used on the Southern Region, some were used for a short period for departmental engineers trains in the Mersey Area.
