Bachmann 32-066 BR Class 43 Warship diesel: Green, small yellow warning panel: D835 Pegasus

The Loco

Based upon the German V200 diesel locos, the Class 43 diesel Hydraulic locos were built with Maybach engines by the North British Company; the similar Class 42 class being built by BR at Swindon.

Both Class 42 and 43 were named after Royal Navy ships - and were thereby known as the Warship class.

Introduced between 1961 and 1962, a relatively short service life saw the Class 43 withdrawn between 1969 and 1971, the diesel hydraulic transmission preferred by the Western Region  locos being considered non-standard.

Class 43s were based at Bristol, Plymouth, Newton Abbot and London (Old Oak Common) and used on west of England main line passenger services such as the "Bristolian" and "Cornish Riviera Express".

Originally painted green, the Western Region started applying maroon in the mid 1960's before BR blue was adopted from 1967. Yellow warning panels were added from 1962 and subsequently full yellow ends were applied.
