4-BEP and 4-CEP multiple units were introduced in the late 1950s / early 1960s for the Kent Coast electrification to operate express services from London Victoria and Charing Cross to Margate, Ramsgate, Canterbury, Dover and Folkestone.
This livery represents that carried from new until until the early 1960s when yellow warning panels were added to each end.
Multiple units are a semi-permanently coupled sets of, in this case, 4 coaches which contain a drivers cab in each end coach. Motors are fitted under the coaches so that the complete "unit" is self propelled and does not a require a separate loco haulage. This enables the train to easily reverse at terminals without requiring a replacement loco at the opposite end. By connecting more than one unit together, longer trains can be run which can be easily split to serve alternative destinations if required.
4-BEPs differed from 4-CEPs in having a Buffet car in place of one of the compartment coaches. Trains often operated in 8 or 12 coach lengths with one 4-BEP, and either 1 or 2 4-CEP units.
